Ice
jamming can occur, when traditional open gutters are clogged with debris
and melting snow and ice has no place to flow. As temperatures fluctuate
during the freezing and melting cycles of winter, slush and ice are
trapped in the bottom of your gutter and down spouts. This is how ice
jams form.
As
excess water runs off of your roof, and cannot flow through your gutter,
it is then redirected and accumulated in other parts of your home such
as your foundation, interior walls, exterior fascia, basement and crawl
spaces. Not only are these areas subject to water damage, but as
temperatures drop, this accumulated water freezes and expands resulting
in cracked walls, foundations and driveways.
Another
condition that can cause ice jams is when your home has insufficient
insulation and/or ventilation. Warm temperatures escaping from inside
your home through eaves and overhangs can cause the snow that’s sitting
in your open gutter to melt. Again, the water has no place to flow and
ice jams form. The most effective way to eliminate the problem is by
installing our heated gutter systems or our heated hood to your existing
hooded gutter.

Icicles
can form on gutter systems from the same alternating melting and
freezing cycles, when water is not allowed to pass freely through your
gutters. Large icicles can be dangerous and can break away from the
gutter causing damage to siding, windows, landscaping, and most
importantly, can cause injury to people. If icicles are extremely large,
they can pull gutters off of your structure, taking with it fascia, and

controlled by a thermostat, which turns the heat on when the gutters
reach 38° and automatically shuts off at 50°. American Gutter
Systems, Inc. recommends that you have a manual shut off switch added to
your thermostat, which should be installed by a local licensed
electrician.

a machine in the manufacturing of our gutters, which allows us to attach
the heating elements under the nose of the leaf and ice hood. The
heating elements are then attached to built-in clips, which have been
custom-designed into the hood. This unique machine and our manufacturing
