Maintenance of Your Seamless Gutters

Normal Conditions

The CastleClad finish on your seamless gutter is subject to chalking and some degree of color change, due to normal wear. Typically, unsightly surface dirt can be removed by simply washing down the gutters with a garden hose and soft bristle brush. While weathering can occur due to sunlight exposure or extreme weather, the CastleClad finish resists peeling, chipping and blistering. Plus, these coatings will resist fading (color change) for a reasonable period of time, depending on the conditions to which your home is exposed. The CastleClad finish also has built-in color retention and its self-cleaning feature resists loose surface dirt caused by normal rainfall.

Unusual Conditions

Where a more thorough cleaning is necessary for stains from tree sap, insecticides, chimney fumes, etc., the finish should be washed with a sponge or soft bristle brush and a solution of detergent and water (e.g., 1/3 cup of detergent per gallon of water). Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. Avoid rigorous rubbing. To minimize streaking, wash from bottom to top.

In some areas, mildew may appear on your gutters as black spots. It can be removed by using the solution described below. Either spray or sponge-apply with soft bristle brush. After 15 to 20 minutes, rinse clean with a hose. This assures thorough cleaning and dilutes the solution so as not to harm any shrubbery below. Test the solution or clean a small area prior to a general application. Avoid skin or eye contact with the solution.

Cleaning Solution

1/3 cup detergent (e.g., Tide)
2/3 cup Soilax
1 quart liquid bleach (e.g., Clorox)
3 quarts water

CAUTION: Greater concentrations may cause damage to the finish. Do not use abrasive or solvent type cleaners or paint removers.

Caulking Compounds and Tar

Mineral spirits may be used in reasonable quantities to remove caulking compounds or tar. Rinse with clear water.
